Description
This is your chance to own a piece of history. In 2013, First Nations artist Val Malesku was selected by Vancouver International Airport to create banners for the exterior of the facility. The design represents "Flying Eagles" and each banner measures appx eight feet tall by three feet wide. These banners are now down and show signs of wear. The wear varies on each piece, but each banner is in tact and free from tears and holes. If you wish to purchase more than one, drop us a message and we can arrange something. For many visitors, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) provides the first and last impression of British Columbia. The airport has long reflected the beauty of the province and its diverse landscape through unique architecture and design, as well as its world-renowned Northwest Coast First Nations art collection. The commitment to capturing B.C.’s unique sense of place and cultural heritage inspired these banners.
Val Malesku has travelled throughout BC, and has been living on Haida Gwaii since the 1970s. She has been a carver and painter, and began working in silver and gold in 1981. Val apprenticed with renowned Haida artist Bill Reid. Her unique designs combine the classic with contemporary in Cree and Northwest Coast styles. In 2005, she was featured in the Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2 exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY. In 2013, Val released her first limited edition print, and in 2014, she released two open edition prints.
